Jülich Ozone Sonde Intercomparison Experiment (JOSIE) and Balloon Experiment on Standards for Ozone Sondes (BESOS) data

Abstract

In order to assess the performance of various electrochemical ozonesondes and to guarantee consistency in ozonesonde data, the environmental simulation facility at the Forschungszentrum Juelich has been established in 1994 as the World Calibration Centre for Ozone Sondes (WCCOS) of WMO-GAW as part of their Quality Assurance (QA) plan. Beginning in 1996, a series of Jülich Ozone Sonde Intercomparison Experiment (JOSIE) campaigns has since been conducted at the WCCOS to evaluate different ozonesonde types [Smit et al., J. Geophys. Res., 2007; Smit et al., 2023, Atm. Meas. Tech., 2023] .

In 2004 the WMO BESOS (Balloon Experiment on Standards for Ozonesondes) field campaign, carried out in Laramie (Wyoming, USA), deployed a large gondola with 18 ozonesondes and the OPM of WCCOS [Deshler et al., J. Geophys. Res. 2008] with results similar to those of JOSIE.
